The 15 tips i have gathered here is completely free and fairly simple. Most are totally risk-free to perform. Before installing, it can still be a good idea to take a backup of your important files. 1. CLEAR HARD DISK

To see how much free space you have on your hard disk, click Start and select My Computer (in Windows Vista: Computer). Right-click the icon for your hard drive and select Properties. Now you see how much free space you have. You should have at least about ten percent free.

If you have little free space you can click the Disk Cleanup. Now Windows count how much space you can save, and when it finishes, you will see a list of what can be removed.

Tick the boxes of the actions you want to perform. None of them are dangerous, but they may be limited. If you choose such as removing temporary internet files it might be marginally slower to surf the sites you visit frequently (because the information must be downloaded again). And select the Compress old files may include old digital photos to be a bit slower to open.

Select the action you want to perform and click OK.

To have too many programs installed on your computer does not just up unnecessary space on your hard disk. Some programs start automatically, and thus eat up power unnecessarily. Moreover, it will be difficult to find in the program list if you have too many programs.

13. REPAIR WINDOWS ...
The longer you use your computer, the worse it works. This applies especially if you frequently install and uninstall programs. Our tips have so far acted to cook and patch - but that's to be more basic than that.
You can reinstall Windows. A reinstallation of Windows fixes all defects and deficiencies that may have occurred after you used it. If any file is missing, it is added to.

You can install in different ways (see tip 14), but the easiest method is called to repair the installation. When you do that, these are all programs and documents left intact. To do this:
• 1. Insert the Windows installation CD to start a menu program. Click Install Windows XP and select Upgrade (Recommended). Click Next.
• 2. Accept the agreement that appears, click Next and enter your product key in the boxes. As a rule, you can find it on the cover to your installation CD. It can also sit or sticker on the computer.
• 3. Click Next and follow the instructions in the wizard on the screen. Note that the reinstallation can take an hour.

TIP: If you purchased a computer where Windows was pre-installed, it is possible that you have to create a so-called recovery disc to do a reinstallation. Check the manual to your computer to see how to create and use the disc!

14. ... Or reinstall HELLBENT
Repairing Windows is a simple measure, but it does not solve all problems. A more effective solution is to do a clean installation. Since the disappearance of your old Windows and all the old programs - and with them any problems.

This means that you also need to reinstall your applications. Your documents are saved, but we recommend that you back up before you begin.
1. Insert the Windows installation CD to start a menu program. Click Install Windows XP and select New Installation (Advanced). Click Next.
2. Accept the agreement that appears, click Next and enter your product key in the boxes. As a rule, you'll find them on the cover to your installation CD. It can also sit or sticker on the computer.
3. Click Next and follow the instructions to repair. Note that the reinstallation can take an hour.

TIP: If you want to get a completely blank computer, you should also format the computer. You can do this by inserting the Windows installation CD in your computer and restart it. When the computer starts, you see the prompt Press any key to boot from CD. The installation is similar to the above, but you may also be a choice to format the hard disk. Note that everything is lost, it is important to back up all your files first.

15. Get help for cleaning

Ccleaner
Ccleaner is a freeware which manages much of the cleaning automatically. In addition to cleaning out unnecessary files and programs, clean the registry. This is where all settings are stored, and if you uninstall the program often is a high risk that there are persistent references to the program that you removed. Third, it allows Ccleaner you remove programs from your computer.

OneCare Safety Scanner
If you do not want to install any special software, Microsoft has an online-based free solution called OneCare Safety Scanner. You drive there directly from your browser.

It contains three parts: Protect (to remove viruses and spyware), Clear (to remove the debris) and Fine (as trimming your computer).
